Q. What is placemaking?

Placemaking is an integrated approach to working with communities on a broad range of issues from infrastructure improvements to town centre management to community capacity building.

Placemaking is about creating meaningful, activated and resilient places. It reinforces the place's unique identity and character and enhances people's distinct sense of place. It respects community values and people in understanding the qualities of each place. These qualities include the physical environment, the history and culture as well as the community's dreams and hopes for the future.

Council has daveloped a Placemaking Charter to embrace placemaking as a corporate initiative that will then drive components of our operations.

Q. What is the PLACE + Program?

PLACE + is an exciting new investment in the town centres, villages and transport corridors across the Sunshine Coast. It is a compilation of programs focused on delivering high quality public spaces and activities for people to enjoy and experience.

Council has chosen to invest in activity centres where the people who make up our unique communities shop, interact, and have a sense of place and belonging. By focusing on these centres council can help the greatest number of people and achieve maximum benefit for the entire region.

The process of improving places involves aligning the disciplines that guide physical change (architects, urban designers, transport planners, social planners etc) with the people that are responsible for its daily functioning (place managers, chambers of commerce and traders) and those who live in it and promote it (community groups, marketing, individuals, tourist boards).

Q. What will happen after the consultation?

Following the first phase of consultation, council will develop a draft Place Making Action Plan for Beerwah. This plan will incorporate a sustainable and vibrant community vision for Beerwah that is clear and achievable. The plan will identify activities that can be implemented by both council and the community itself in the areas of capital works improvements, planning and environment policy development, economic development initiatives and community and cultural benefit actions.

The second phase of consultation will occur in early 2012 and will provide an opportunity for the community to provide feedback on the draft Place Making Action Plan.

Implementation of the Action Plan will occur in from late 2012 through to 2015. Council has established a $3.45M capital works fund to implement the infrastructure elements of the Plan.
