Exploring excellence in engagement

What does an engaged community mean to you?

We are developing a concept for a centre of excellence in community engagement and we took to the streets to hear your views.

Throughout August and September we hit the streets, visiting six locations, to explore what excellence in engagement looks like with you.

Residents and visitors alike were invited to step up to one of our roving photo booths to have a say on what an engaged community means to them and took home a free photograph as a keepsake.

For those who missed the opportunity to make it to one of our roving events, there was also the opportunity to provide comment via the online Guest Book.

The public consultation period for the Exploring Excellence in Engagement program finished on 26 September 2017.

Check out what the community had to say. #engagedsc

Where to from here

Council has recently signed a Regional Partnership Agreement with the University of the Sunshine Coast to collaborate on reviewing our community engagement approach.

This Exploring Excellence in Engagement program is the first step in a community visioning process to develop a concept for a centre of excellence in community engagement.

This community feedback will be used to inform:

  • Continued development towards a centre of excellence in community engagement
  • A review of council’s Community Engagement Framework.

Further opportunities to have your say will be promoted as the project develops.

Is a community that actively takes part in decision-making and delivery of activities that help build community capability and cohesion.Engagement should be a continuum and fit-for-purpose. It should also begin with education - enabling stakeholders to participate effectively. We are all responsible for engagement - however traditional models such as IAP2 should be modified and tailored to meet the needs of specific projects and initiatives. Co-design models and concepts such as the 3rd Alternative should be actively explored and applied where appropriate. There are, however, activities where co-design and collaboration are not well positioned - such as highly regulated activities. In these circumstances the emphasis should be on education and building stakeholder experience and potentially evangelists.
