In this video, I really wanted to highlight the unpredictable nature of nature. That’s why I used the bucket of water, and also it was fun. I also wanted to show the protection a plan (or in my case an umbrella) could give. I came up with my storyboard and asked mum to throw the bucket, which was difficult as she was also taking the videos of me. I asked my grandpa and neighbour to help and asked their permission to be in my video. As Queenslanders and living on the coast in unpredictable times we need to be ready for anything! The government has a great website full of excellent resources to make sure we know how and what to prepare. Instead of giving all the information I decided to simply plug the website qld.gov.au/get ready hopefully the video will inspire If people don’t know what is out there that can help us prepare it cant help at all. Building awareness of useful resources is really important! Do we have a plan for meeting points, or essential and precious things to grab in an evacuation? Do we need a checklist for a family evacuation kit or know how to prepare our homes ahead of time to minimise damage. Could we reach out to our neighbours or those in need? This video is really about making the “What If” plan name and website loud and clear and to get people thinking about what they would do in a natural disaster.

In Grade 5, at St Joseph’s Nambour, we completed a unit of work where were looking at the impact of bushfires and floods on communities and how people respond to these natural disasters. We wanted to find out if there was something we could do to get ready in case a disaster hit. The recent catastrophic bushfires across the country (including Peregian) were in our minds because we had seen the devastation and watched the Fire Fight Australia concert on television. We thought we could make up our own song about being ready for natural disasters and so decided to change the words to Home Among the Gumtrees, a song we had been learning in class. During our investigations we invited council's Disaster Resilience Officer to talk to us about how we should prepare for bushfires. We had used the SCC’s Disaster Hub as part of our learning, but council showed us a lot more. We were shocked by some of the videos we saw showing that disasters (particularly storms and flooding) can happen right here in our own backyard. We played our song and decided we would enter the Get Ready Schools Program for 2020. All of us have developed “What if” Plans for our families and we have made a thirty second commercial which demonstrates the importance of being prepared for a natural disaster. We had fun making the ad and we hope you like its message.

I am creating and submitting a video for a competition. This video explains why everyone should have an emergency plan. The video is aimed at every age. I will explain why you need an emergency plan for example how much damage natural disasters can cause and the littlest things that can cause them (a thunderstorm can turn into a cyclone). I will also explain that you need an evacuation kit. In this part of the video I will tell you what to pack in an evacuation in case of emergency. Within the video I will have a voiceover accompanied by pictures and other videos (me packing an emergency kit ect). I got the information in the video from my teachers and a lady from the Sunshine Coast Council (she came to our school). Along with other items she gifted us a ruler with a website written on it. I have added this website in my video, so that others can visit it, as it is a good source of information when needing to evacuate. The lady showed Year 6 a few slides of what can happen, what will happen and how we need to get ready. As soon as I saw what could happen to roads, houses and even whole cities, I knew I had to encourage others to do the same as me (get ready for an emergency).
