Project Overview

Overview

Sunshine Coast Council undertook a large-scale waste engagement project on the future of waste and resource recovery on the Sunshine Coast, including a third bin to capture food and garden waste.

Around half of the material in Sunshine Coast household general waste bins could be diverted from landfill and recycled. The Sunshine Coast Council therefore undertook a community engagement project to look at how council can collect waste from households to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfill and achieve recycling targets outlined in the Queensland Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy.

As a part of the project a large-scale community survey was undertaken and a community panel was established. After the first workshop with the community panel participants were asked to complete an at home survey about their waste practices in the home to identify their current waste behaviours and perceptions of food organics and garden organics (FOGO).

The survey asked participants about their waste habits, use of green waste bins and recycling habits. It also asked participants about what challenges there would be in their household if Council was to introduce a FOGO service in the region.

The information gathered from this survey was used in the second workshop to assist in the development of the service design options.
