About the project
We invited our community to share views on potential future improvements to the playground at Double Bay Park on Kawana Island.
The playground is part of a larger park used by people of all ages. Community engagement was undertaken to identify preferred play opportunities for potential future playground improvements.
Community engagement
Summary
We invited our community to share views on potential future improvements to the playground at Double Bay Park on Kawana Island.
Between 23 March and 24 April 2026, community members were invited to have their say by completing a short online survey.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and ideas. Your feedback plays an important role in shaping future improvements to this valued community space.
Community feedback was gathered through:
- an online Have your Say survey
- promotion via Council communication channels and the project webpage
- promotion via Councillor and community group social media channels
- site signs advertising community engagement.
The survey invited participants to reflect on their current use of Double Bay Park and identify preferred play opportunities for potential future playground improvements.
- 121 survey responses received
- most respondents were local residents from Parrearra and Kawana Island
- over three‑quarters of respondents visit the park weekly or more often
- feedback mainly reflects the views of regular park users who know how the space is used each day.
This level of participation demonstrates strong local interest in the future of Double Bay Park and its role as a community space.
The playground is valued and there is strong support for improvement
Most people said they like the playground but it is limited. They support keeping it and improving it so it offers more variety, better quality, and caters for a broader range of ages.
A recurring sentiment was:
“The park has great potential, but the playground needs more to do.”
As part of the survey, we asked our community to rank their preferred types of play equipment for potential future playground improvements.
What the community prioritised most
Based on responses from 121 participants, the overall order of preference was:
1. Climbing play
Climbing elements ranked highest overall, with more than half of respondents placing this as their top preference. This highlights strong interest in active, physically challenging play that supports strength, coordination and confidece.

2. Imaginative and sensory play

3. Scrambling play
crambling and movement‑based play, such as nets, ropes and low‑risk challenges, was also strongly supported, reinforcing interest in dynamic and engaging play rather than single‑use equipment.

4. Seating and comfort
Seating and comfort was a clear priority alongside play equipment, emphasising the importance of places for carers and families to sit, supervise and stay longer at the park.

The engagement results gives us a clear sense of what our community wants most.
Overall, people are looking for:
- More active and challenging play
- imaginative and sensory play options
- play for a range of ages
- better amenities like seating and comfort.
These insights will guide the next stage and help ensure it reflects community priorities.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and ideas. Your feedback plays an important role in shaping future improvements to this valued community space.
Next steps
Thank you to everyone who had their say.
Based on community feedback and strong park use, construction is scheduled, subject to final approval. Council will:
- use the feedback to guide the next stage of planning and design
- continue planning in line with community priorities
- make sure playground improvements balance play value with the park’s wider role as an open, flexible community space.
Some ideas raised through the engagement sit outside the scope of a playground upgrade. However, all feedback will help inform longer‑term planning for Double Bay Park.
