Project overview
Sunshine Coast Council invited feedback on the concept designs for Stage 1, 2, 3 and 6 of the Mooloolaba to University (M2U) Active Transport Corridor. This project will improve the active transport network between Mooloolaba and the University of the Sunshine Coast by creating an inclusive walking and riding outcome for people of all ages and abilities.
M2U will be delivered in stages (see below):
Background
Project benefits
Strategic alignment
Sunshine Coast Council’s Corporate Plan 2025-30 includes ‘Our Strong Community’ goal. This encourages a healthy and active community through planning and delivery of the transport network to support active transport modes (walking and cycling).
To align with strategic priorities, the project will also reference Council’s Active Transport Plan 2026. This considers our region's growing population, significant infrastructure and events being planned, including The Wave and Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues and the importance of providing connectivity to transport hubs, schools, hospitals, through connected and safe paths and crossings.
Previous consultation
Phase 1 Community Engagement, which was carried out in November 2024, aimed to introduce the project alignment and seek feedback on key safety concerns, issues and opportunities along the corridor. A total of 255 individual submissions were received from the community and key stakeholders.
Earlier consultation was carried out with the community for Stages 5 and 6 in 2023. Feedback helped Council understand community priorities and refine the planning of the corridor. Key themes included a preference for off-road, separated walking and cycling paths, improved safety at roundabout crossings, and connections to the Stringybark Road Bridge, which is now complete. Based on this input, the preferred alignment follows the eastern side of Stringybark Road and the southern side of Ballinger Road, with off-road, separated paths and priority crossings at all intersections along the route.
You can find out more about earlier consultation undertaken here.
How the M2U route was selected
M2U is recognised as a Priority A Route in the Queensland Government’s Principal Cycle Network. This rating is the highest priority allocated to provide valuable and safe active transport connections for people walking, riding and using micro-mobility.
The Active Transport Route will cater for people of all ages and abilities and integrate effectively with surrounding open space areas. The corridor will help create calmer streets, key accesses, assembly points, and integrate effectively with surrounding open space area.
This project is funded for design and construction by the South East Queensland (SEQ) Liveability Fund.

Next steps
Design work is continuing for Stages 1, 2, 3 and 6.
Mid 2026 we will share another project update for Stages 1, 2 and 3. At that time, we will also share the proposed revised design developed from the feedback received from community engagement with property owners and stakeholders adjoining the alignment.
Stage 6 will require additional funding to support project progression.
We remain committed to working closely with our community as each stage progresses. Our goal is to deliver a safe, connected and accessible active transport network for the Sunshine Coast.
We will keep our community updated with information as it becomes available.
