Overview

Overview

The "Rickety Bridge" at Dick Caplick Park was removed due to safety concerns, prompting the need for a new play element that aligns with the community’s expectations.

New play structure design

Based on community feedback received through the community engagement period, the Boo House by Playrope has been selected as the preferred play structure.

Council explored various designs for a cubby or hut-type structure.

The Boo House provides diverse play opportunities, encouraging imaginative, social, and interactive play for children.

The design is suitable for the location, complementing the other existing equipment in the park.

It meets Council’s requirements for durability and safety.

When designing the new playground structure, we are focusing on the following key points:

  • Creating a fun and engaging play experience
  • Offering a unique play feature not currently in the park
  • Using strong, durable materials that are low maintenance
  • Meeting all playground safety standards
  • Avoiding impact on existing trees
  • Complementary to the parks existing character
  • Include features that promote belonging, being and becoming
  • Consider sustainability in material choice

Community engagement

Community engagement approach

As part of the project, community engagement was undertaken to gather feedback on what the community values in play spaces and what they might like to see in their park.

Between 10 June and 8 July 2024 community members could have their say by completing an online survey.

To promote the survey, signs were erected on site with a QR code to directly link respondents to the survey. Additionally, emails were sent to the local community and community groups affiliated with Eumundi.

Over this 4-week period, the survey had over 450 views, with 101 responses and two community members submitted feedback via email.

Thank you to all community members who had their say.

Community feedback - What we heard

The results indicated strong community support for a play structure that blends with the park’s natural environment and provides inclusive play opportunities for children of all ages.

Specifically, the community expressed interest in a cubby-like structure that encourages imaginative play and gross motor skills, catering to preschoolers and offering “hang out” spaces for school-aged children who frequent the park.

From this data, the following conclusions were made: 57.43% of respondents visit the park a few times a week, making this the most common visit frequency, followed by 23.76% of respondents visiting weekly and 11% visiting monthly.

All respondents were from the South East Queensland catchment, with the majority being from the Sunshine Coast Region. Of this, over 55% of respondents were from Eumundi.
