Overview

About the project

Felix Parry Park in Marcoola is a much‑loved district‑level park enjoyed by locals and visitors. Lorraine Avenue was designed and constructed as part of the Marcoola North Streetscape Project and the concept plan for the park was prepared in 2023 to accommodate improvements to park facilities.

Following the release of the initial concept plan, the Marcoola Community Group told us that they value the park and would love to see the concept refined to better reflect how they use and enjoy the space.

The Marcoola Community Group also shared a detailed list of priorities and preferences for the future of Felix Parry Park. From this feedback, the following key themes emerged:

  • Separate the playground from the coastal pathway
  • Maximise sun protection for the playground
  • Ensure the playground is set back from nearby residential and commercial properties
  • Locate the playground close to the existing toilets/future amenities
  • Use existing infrastructure wherever practicable
  • Ensure the playground is easily accessible from on‑street parking
  • Remove blind spots along the shared path
  • Maximise green space and minimise paved areas
  • Incorporate inclusive play equipment
  • Retain the southern area near the amenities block for nippers activities
  • Provide equipment suitable for teenagers (e.g., ping pong table)
  • Introduce a cohesive theme for the playground.

In response, Council took the opportunity to revisit the concept plan and update it based on this feedback.

Next steps

Council is undertaking community engagement to understand if the community support the draft concept plan and if it accurately reflects local needs and preferences.

If our community supports the proposed design, we will present the final plan and will move to a staged delivery approach and seek funding opportunities for detailed design and construction.

Council will continue to keep our community updated as the project progresses.

Background

Felix Parry Park was officially upgraded from a local park to a district‑level park in September 2024, recognising the important role it already played as a key recreational destination for Marcoola and surrounding areas.

To bring the park in line with other district-level parks, we are working closely with community to shape an updated concept plan that supports a vibrant, healthy and growing neighbourhood.

Concept Plan

After carefully reviewing all community feedback, we have updated Felix Parry Park concept plan to reflect your priorities. Key updates include:

  • Coastal pathway realignment to increase separation between the playground and the coastal pathway.
  • A new ping pong table located in a shaded area with minimal exposure to coastal winds.
  • A centralised activity hub combining playground, fitness equipment and the ping pong table, all connected by existing pathways.
  • Improved accessibility, with pathways linking the activity hub to on‑street parking. Mural and pathway artwork will provide additional interactive play opportunities.
  • A themed playground, aligned with the streetscape theme: the loggerhead turtle lifecycle. Marcoola Beach is a significant hatchling site, and the play layout reflects the turtle’s journey from eggs to adulthood through interactive storytelling.
  • Better spatial arrangement, ensuring adequate distance from shops, residences, and the coastal pathway, while also benefiting from morning shade provided by existing vegetation.
  • A new shade sail to provide protection from afternoon and midday sun.
  • Retention of open kick‑and‑throw space.
  • Preservation of the southern area near the amenities block for nippers activities, while still maintaining close proximity between the amenities and the activity hub.
