Project Summary

Sunshine Coast Council is preparing a new planning scheme that will replace the current Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014. A planning scheme is a legal document - it is the main ‘rule book’ for regulating land use and development in a local council’s area. The new planning scheme will set the vision for the Sunshine Coast in 2041 and guide growth and development to help achieve that vision.

The New Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Project is a multi-year project, intended to be completed by 2024. There are many steps in preparing a new planning scheme and we are only at the beginning of the process.

Council is committed to ensuring that the community and other stakeholders play a meaningful role in the preparation of the new planning scheme, with an extensive community engagement program.

Council is currently preparing for preliminary public consultation (expected early 2022) on the proposed planning directions for the Sunshine Coast region and local areas. Feedback received from the community and other stakeholders will inform the drafting of the new planning scheme.

Project briefing

Council is offering all state and federal members of parliament within the Sunshine Coast region an individual project briefing. The briefing will provide elected members with the opportunity to provide feedback on matters relevant to the preparation of the new planning scheme in relation to both the communities they represent as well as region-wide issues.
