Overview

Project overview

Sunshine Coast Council is inviting community feedback on two concept designs for the River Esplanade Active Transport Link between Foote Street and Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba.

The project aims to improve connections for people walking, riding and using mobility devices, while enhancing the foreshore with new landscaping and public space upgrades. This link forms part of the broader Mooloolaba to Maroochydore (M2M) Active Transport Corridor and will connect with the active transport corridor from Venning Street to Parkyn Parade, which is being delivered through the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project.

Concept designs

These are artist impressions only and aim to illustrate an example of treatment options for the active transport link.

Both draft concept designs aim to deliver a safer, more accessible and attractive active transport corridor along River Esplanade between Foote Street and Parkyn Parade.

Each option seeks to balance community needs for green space, parking, safety, and connectivity, while contributing to the broader M2M Active Transport Corridor and supporting the vision of the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project.

Background

Previous consultation

Community consultation and feedback has been an integral part of the development of the M2M Active Transport Corridor and initial feedback was also captured as part of the Placemaking Mooloolaba Master Plan.

The M2M Active Transport Corridor will encourage sustainable modes of transport and boost local tourism and economic development in line with Council's Sunshine Coast Integrated Transport Strategy (adopted in December 2018) and the current Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan 2011-2031.

How the M2M route was selected

M2M is recognised as a Priority A Route in the Queensland Government’s Principal Cycle Network. This rating is the highest priority allocated to provide valuable and safe active transport connections for people walking, riding and using micro-mobility.

The Active Transport Route will cater for people of all ages and abilities and integrate effectively with surrounding open space areas. The corridor will help create calmer streets, key accesses, assembly points, and integrate effectively with surrounding open space area.

This project is funded for design and construction by the South East Queensland (SEQ) Liveability Fund.

Next steps

Feedback gathered on the concept designs during this phase of engagement will help select and finalise a detailed design for the River Esplanade, Mooloolaba Active Transport Link so it best reflects the needs of the local community.

The final concept design will be presented in 2026 and will be made available on this Have your Say Sunshine Coast project page.

Implementation and construction is planned for 2027.
