Overview

Project update

The Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan 2026 (the Plan) was adopted by Council at the Ordinary Meeting on 21 May 2026.

The Plan incorporates community feedback compiled over two phases of community engagement.

Community engagement

Phase 1

The first phase of community engagement to inform the draft Plan was undertaken between 20 May and 17 June 2024.

In this phase, Council invited the community to help shape the region’s new Active Transport Plan 2026.

The information gave Council a clearer understanding of how people use walking and riding networks, the barriers that limit active transport, and the factors that could encourage more people to walk or ride for short trips instead of using private cars.

To learn more about what we heard during this engagement period, you can read the Phase 1 Community Engagement Summary Report.

Phase 2

Between 7 October and 3 November 2025, Council undertook engagement on the draft Plan.

This provided an opportunity to gather additional feedback on the draft Plan and the proposed active transport network mapping. Council invited the community to explore the draft plan and provide feedback by:

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback and contributed to developing the Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan 2026.

Next steps

Over the next 10 years the Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan 2026 will guide Council’s initiatives on active transport programs, planning, infrastructure and advocacy.

This work is all part of achieving Council’s vision to create a liveable, healthy, safe, and connected Sunshine Coast by making walking, riding, and rolling an easy choice for everyday trips.

Background

More and more people are choosing to live, work, and enjoy life on the Sunshine Coast. As our population grows, it’s important that our transport systems help people to move around easily and safely.

We want the Sunshine Coast to be a place where getting from A to B is simple - whether you’re walking, riding a bike, using a wheelchair, or catching public transport. That’s why Council is working to make our active transport network better connected, safer and more inclusive for everyone.

Council is committed to making active transport, like walking, riding, and rolling, an option for people of all ages, genders, and abilities. We want everyone in our community to feel safe and that the paths to move around locally are inclusive of their needs.

Council commenced the process to develop an updated Active Transport Plan in 2023.

Early engagement was conducted in May and June 2024 to make sure the Plan reflects the needs of the Sunshine Coast community. This engagement helped us understand community views on active transport.

The feedback, together with an assessment of the current network, planned major projects and events, and relevant strategic documents, informed the development of the draft Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan.

The draft Plan was shared with the community during a second phase of community engagement for comment and feedback in October and November 2025.

Interactive Feedback Map

The aspirational draft active transport network forms part of the draft plan. These networks will also help guide future planning for the region and will inform the proposed Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme.

Council wants to create walking and riding paths that are safe, easy to use, and welcoming for everyone, no matter their age, gender, ability, or how they move around.

To help more people choose walking or riding instead of driving short distances, Council is focusing on areas with lots of places to go, especially near schools and town centres.

Community members were invited to provide feedback using the interactive map to help Council understand what our community needs and where improvements should be made.
