Overview

We’ve created the draft Sunshine Coast Active Transport Plan (draft plan) that will guide Council’s work over the next 10 years on active transport programs, planning, infrastructure and advocacy.

This work is all part of achieving our vision to "Create a liveable, healthy, safe and connected Sunshine Coast by making walking, riding and wheeling an easy choice for everyday trips."

The draft plan is based on what our community has told us. It sets out practical steps to make it easier and safer to use active transport.

The draft plan has been informed by:

  • A clear definition of what it means to travel by active transport
  • Feedback from our community
  • Proposed major projects and events in the region
  • Strategies that guide how we plan for transport.

From this, we’ve identified four guiding objectives and three priority areas to help shape our work.

Our objectives include:

  • Equitable access for all - everyone feels safe and included
  • Liveable and sustainable - preserving our lifestyle and amenity as change occurs
  • Vibrant and attractive places - creating places where people want to spend time
  • Creating change - becoming a place where safety and walking and riding is the norm.

Community engagement

Council invited the community to explore the draft plan and provide feedback by:

Feedback was accepted between 9am Tuesday, 7 October and 5pm Monday, 3 November 2025.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to understand the details of the draft plan and had their say.

Our Sunshine Coast community is passionate about the future of our region and generously contributed their thoughts and ideas. We heard from a diverse range of voices regarding many different aspects of the draft plan.

What happens now?

Council will now carefully review all community feedback received during the consultation period. This review will take time to ensure every submission is properly considered. This process will help Council determine whether to proceed with the proposed draft plan and what changes, if any, may be required in response to community feedback.

Background

More and more people are choosing to live, work and enjoy life on the Sunshine Coast. As our population grows, it’s important that our transport systems help all people to move around easily and safely.

We want the Sunshine Coast to be a place where getting from A to B is simple - whether you’re walking, riding a bike, using a wheelchair, or catching public transport. That’s why Council is working to make our active transport network better connected, safer and more inclusive for everyone.

Council is committed to making active transport, like walking, cycling and wheeling, an option for people of all ages, genders and abilities. We want everyone in our community to feel safe and that the paths to move around locally are inclusive of their needs.

To understand local travel preferences, values and barriers to using active transport, between 20 May and 17 June 2024, Council asked for community input. Community feedback helped Council gain essential insights into perceptions of active transport across the region.

From these insights three priority areas for action emerged that have helped to shape draft plan to improve active transport on the Sunshine Coast:

Interactive Feedback Map

The aspirational draft active transport network forms part of the draft plan. These networks will also help guide future planning for the region and will inform the proposed Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme.

Council wants to create walking and riding paths that are safe, easy to use, and welcoming for everyone, no matter their age, gender, ability, or how they move around.

To help more people choose walking or riding instead of driving short distances, Council is focusing on areas with lots of places to go, especially near schools and town centres.

Community members were invited to provide feedback using the interactive map to help Council understand what our community needs and where improvements should be made.
