Transport
Transport keeps our communities connected, both within and beyond the Sunshine Coast region. By creating better opportunities for housing in locations close to jobs, services and recreation, the proposed planning scheme works towards creating vibrant, walkable communities and reducing cars on our roads.
Major transport infrastructure projects, like public transport and highway upgrades, are most often funded and delivered by the State and Federal Governments. The proposed planning scheme seeks to support and encourage the use of public transport by accommodating future growth around existing and proposed high frequency transport hubs, and by supporting the provision of walking and riding links to public transport routes.
State Government public transport planning is underway for rail and bus rapid transport systems for the Sunshine Coast (Sunshine Coast Public Transport and The Wave). Council continues to work with the State and Federal governments and other infrastructure providers to deliver what is needed to support our region now and in the future, including transport.
Council’s Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) outlines local road and other infrastructure priorities and is supported by Council’s ongoing capital works program. A proposed new LGIP has been prepared by Council to support the proposed planning scheme.
Active transport
Active transport solutions for walking and riding play an important role in our integrated transport network, helping us to improve our wellbeing, minimise cars on our roads and reduce emissions.
The proposed planning scheme supports active transport use through:
- revised and updated mapping showing paths and routes for active transport
- improved road cross sections, prioritising comfortable walking and riding paths
- plans for walkable urban villages that aim to reduce reliance on car trips.
Car parking and development
The proposed planning scheme sets clear rules to ensure car parking demand is assessed for new development, including requirements for:
- the provision of sufficient on-site parking spaces
- dedicated storage areas in multi-unit residential developments, keeping garages for cars
- maintaining minimum front boundary setbacks for dwelling house garages, to leave space for on-site driveway parking
- requiring dedicated charging bays and infrastructure for electric vehicles in certain types of developments.
